Nuit Blanche

La série Nuit Blanche cherche à confronter le mythe des sports d’hiver à ses réalités et ambiguïtés. Elle explore son paradoxe fondateur : offrir l’illusion d’une montagne vierge au prix d’aménagements aussi titanesques que quotidiens. Ainsi, dans le silence de la nuit, les engins de damage travaillent inlassablement l’or blanc pour transformer chaque matin la montagne en un espace policé et accessible. Impossible à appréhender d’un seul regard, souvent ignorée du skieur, l’ampleur de ce labeur est révélé par un temps de pose pouvant durer toute une nuit. Les phares des engins mécaniques lacèrent la montagne en traçant dans la nuit le dessin lumineux des pistes de ski. Le paysage devient construction, abstraction, allégorie de la lente métamorphose de la montagne en un espace domestiqué. Je parcours et enregistre des espaces géographiques. J’explore les relations complexes et parfois troubles qui se nouent entre imaginaires, aménagements du territoire et pratiques sociales. Je recherche « l’expérience du paysage », l’engagement physique avant que s’impose à moi le temps de la prise de vue. Je ne poursuis pas l’instant décisif, j’œuvre dans une durée déterminante; Celle du temps de pose, qui efface l’anecdote, scénarise et métamorphose le propos abordé : la fabrique réelle et imaginaire d’un lieu. Le dispositif mis en oeuvre dicte et rend possible cette temporalité. La pratique de la chambre 20x25 cm associée à l’itinérance m’immergent totalement et me confrontent aux réalités du terrain que je veux ressentir.

White Night

The Nuit Blanche series seeks to confront the myth of winter sports to its realities as well as ambiguities. It explores its founding paradox: offering the illusion of a pristine mountain at any cost, thanks to titanic and daily development efforts. Thus, in the silence of the night, the groomers tirelessly work the white gold powder for the mountain to be transformed every morning into a civilized and accessible place. Impossible to grasp at a glance, often ignored by the skier, the extent of this work is revealed by an exposure time that can last a whole night. Headlights of the grooming vehicles lacerate the mountain through the night, plotting unique light drawings of the ski tracks. The landscape becomes construction, abstraction, an allegory of the slow metamorphosis of the mountain into a domesticated place.

I have travelled and have recorded geographical areas; I have explored the complex and sometimes murky relationships that develop between realm of imagination, land development and social practices. I have been looking for «the experience of the landscape», a physical commitment, before the time of the shooting imposes itself to me. I do not pursue the decisive moment; I am working in a determining duration. The duration of the exposure time, that subdues trivialities, stages and metamorphoses our topic of interest: the real and imaginary manufacture of a place. The artistic process implemented here dictates and enables this temporality. The use of an 8x10 inches view camera associated with solitary touring results in the complete immersion, which allows me to get confronted to the realities of the place, which I genuinely want to fully experience.
